Four Steps to Cultivate a Morning Routine to Soothe Anxiety

Starting the day with a sense of calm and intention can make a significant difference, especially for those of us who experience heightened anxiety in the mornings. Whether it’s due to a poor night’s sleep, a looming deadline, or relationship concerns, morning anxiety is a common challenge. You’re not alone in this experience, and with a few mindful practices, you can create a morning routine that soothes your anxiety and sets a positive tone for the day. Here are four steps to cultivate a morning routine to soothe anxiety.

Step 1: Begin with Mindful Awakening

Resist the urge to reach for your phone and scroll through social media as soon as you wake up. Our minds need time to transition from rest to wakefulness gently. Instead, take a few moments to breathe deeply and set a calming intention for your day. Notice how avoiding the influx of information first thing can create a more peaceful start.

Step 2: Embrace a Soothing Ritual

Create a morning ritual that nourishes your soul and calms your nervous system. This could be as simple as enjoying your coffee or tea outside, surrounded by the soothing sights and sounds of nature. Spending just 5 to 10 minutes in the fresh air can have a grounding effect. Alternatively, journaling about your thoughts and feelings can help you process any anxiety you’re experiencing.

Step 3: Nourish Your Body

A hectic morning often leaves little time for a proper breakfast, but nourishing your body is crucial. Take the time to prepare a healthy breakfast that you enjoy. Planning your meals in advance can make this easier. Starting your day with nutritious food fuels your body and mind, helping to stabilize your mood and reduce anxiety.

Step 4: Invite Compassion and Playfulness

When anxiety arises, greet it with compassion rather than judgment. Acknowledge your feelings with kindness and try to bring a sense of playfulness into your morning routine. A gentle reminder that it’s okay to feel anxious can make a big difference. Humor and lightheartedness can be powerful tools in reducing the intensity of anxiety.
