Social Anxiety…A Holiday Guest We Didn’t Invite

As we step into the festive whirl of the holiday season, a familiar guest may accompany many of us: social anxiety. At Anchored Counseling Company, we want to unwrap this topic with warmth and understanding, offering a beacon of light for those who might feel overwhelmed in social tides.

Social anxiety isn’t just about being shy or introverted; it’s an overestimation of the perceived threats in social interactions. This can stem from our temperament or from less-than-joyful memories of past gatherings. It’s the silent conversations we have with ourselves, often laced with a harsh critique of our every move and the moves of those around us.

Three Strategies to Engage with Ease

1. Recognition: Your Body’s Social Compass

First, let’s tune into our body’s signals. Does your chest tighten at the thought of a work party? Does your speech accelerate when you’re standing in a circle of new acquaintances? These are your body’s ways of signaling anxiety. By acknowledging these signs, we can better understand our experiences and prepare ourselves to face social situations with greater awareness and self-compassion.

2. Storytelling: Separating Fact from Fiction

Next, consider the narratives you tell yourself in social scenarios. “They didn’t smile back, so they must dislike me” is a common story that may not hold true. Our thoughts are often not rooted in factual information or experiences. We have a choice in how we respond to our thoughts. We may laugh it off, share with a friend who understands our anxiety, or practice flexible alternatives.

3. Safety: Creating Comfort in the Crowd

Finding safety can be as simple as connecting with a trusted friend in the room or as personal as stepping out for a moment of solitude. It could also mean holding onto a glass of water as a comforting gesture. Safety in social settings is about finding what works for you and allowing yourself that grace.

Approaching Over Avoiding: The Path to Confidence

Lastly, consider the power of choice. The decision to engage in social activities, despite feelings of anxiety, can be incredibly empowering. It teaches us that we can tolerate discomfort and reinforces our ability to handle challenging situations. So, yes, even if anxiety is tagging along, you can still partake in the joy of the season.

You Are Not Alone

If social settings during the holidays seem daunting, remember that you are not alone. Many share this struggle, and it’s okay to seek fun and connection at your own pace. Your right to enjoy the season is as valid as the twinkling lights and the cheerful music.

If you find yourself needing support, remember that Anchored Counseling Company is here. We offer a relational and impactful approach to therapy, where you can explore these experiences in a safe and nurturing environment and learn to foster meaningful connections with yourself and others.

Invitation to Authentic Connection

This holiday season, let’s approach our gatherings with an invitation to be authentic and present. Let’s replace the fear of judgment with the warmth of genuine connection. And let’s remember that the holiday spirit is not about perfection but about the joy of being together, imperfections and all. Hoping that your holidays are filled with meaningful connections and moments of peace.

Becoming anchored in hope,
