OCD Concerns

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD for short) is an anxiety disorder. OCD is marked by obsessions and compulsions. The obsessional thoughts are intrusive in nature and cause significant distress. This typically leads an individual to engage in compulsions in an effort to reduce anxiety. Unfortunately, compulsive behaviors are life- interfering, may be tremendously time-consuming, and oftentimes don’t line up with one’s value system. OCD is oftentimes referred to as the doubting disorder. Individuals with OCD often experience inflated responsibility and difficulty tolerating uncertainty.

Compulsions can be overt (commonly known compulsions are checking and counting behaviors) or more covert (mental compulsions that include mental rehearsing or reviewing). Additionally, individuals with OCD oftentimes feel their brain is “broken” or “doesn’t work properly”. We are here to tell you there is hope with appropriate professional treatments. The therapeutic work in the treatment of OCD includes reducing, and hopefully ceasing, compulsions, learning to give intrusive thoughts less value, tolerating uncertainty, and identifying and living according to one’s values.
